Pathology

Overview

The basic policy of Pathology Department of İstanbul Healthcare Practice and Research Center, Başkent University is to provide the most reliable healthcare services by a dynamic team at the shortest time possible using the state-of-the-art equipment. We act very carefully and meticulously not only for internal service requests, but also for external request. “Frozen” (intraoperative consultation service) is available round the clock; in other words, the tissues that are deemed suspicious by the surgeon in the surgery are evaluated by Pathologists using a specialized method in 10 minutes.

Biopsy tests are concluded in 1 to 4 working days depending on histopathological requirements.

Histochemical staining and immunohistochemical methods required for diagnosis and treatment are run by standardized automated systems that can analyze up to 100 antibodies. Specific factors are determined to finalize diagnosis and guide treatments, such as primary focus of the tumor, staging, proliferation index and prognosis markers. Immunofluorescence analyzes are supplemented by diagnostic histochemical and immunohistochemical staining methods and tests can be analyzed at daily intervals by fully automated systems.

“Conventional” cytology methods are used at cytology laboratories to analyze specimens and immunohistochemichal analyses are performed, when needed. When specimens are collected at relevant departments of our hospital, where the interventional procedures are performed, pathologists assess adequacy and appropriateness of specimen for each patient, when required.

Tissues/organs sent to the Pathology Clinic are retained for 30 days after report is issued, while paraffin blocks, preparations and reports are retained for “infinite” period. The tissues/organs, paraffin blocks and preparations, which are retained, are required for treatment of relevant disease, they are recorded and delivered to the patient.
